Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, a lot of people felt unsafe going to a public gym or exercise facility.  The vaccine is now here and we are starting to show signs of potentially beating COVID in the near future.  This past year has been challenging in many ways, including maintaining physical fitness.  It is time to step-up and kick off your new exercise plan!

During 2020, I placed my gym membership on hold and started running.  I did try some at home weight training and body weight exercises, but did not find it very enjoyable.  Running has been my main source of physical activity.  Lets look at some ways to venture out and try some new types of physical activity.

Here are 10 suggestions on getting you back in shape now.

  1. Join a Running Group.  You can check your local running groups on Facebook or visit your local running store to sign up.
  2. Try a Gym Membership.  Hundreds of options here.  Find a gym that fits you culturally and is affordable.
  3. Signup for a HITT class.  There are some unique options with HITT classes.  Most gyms provide classes and some facilities, like CrossFit, Iron Tribe or Orange Theory specialize in HITT exercises.
  4. Find a Yoga class.  A lot of gyms now offer Yoga classes.  You can also find companies that specialize in yoga or take on a unique spin like HOT or GOAT yoga.  Have fun with this one.
  5. Signup for Kickboxing class.  Kickboxing went through a trendy phase over the past few years.  Gyms and kickboxing storefronts started provide training.  Again, find a facility that fits you culturally and is affordable.
  6. Try Trail Running.  This may seem tough for some.  Depending on your level of fitness, this could start off as trail walking, hiking, jogging and then eventually running.  In our area, there are dozens of trails within thirty minutes of our house.  Enjoy your time outside while getting some exercise.
  7. Swim to Get in Shape.  Most of us have been seeming since we were kids.  I will be the first one to tell you that swimming as an adult seems more difficult.  If I were to pick up swimming again, I would sign up for an adult swim class to learn some basic breathing and swimming techniques.
  8. Try Biking.  If you like gadgets and gears like me, beware bikes can get expensive.  Buy a used bike online, from a store or friend that is affordable.  If you end up like biking, you can always upgrade.
  9. Find an Exercise Partner.  Over the years, this has been extremely helpful for me and I believe it will be helpful for you.  I have often achieved my greatest fitness level when I had someone holding me accountable.
  10. Start Rock Climbing.  I started this a few years ago to mix up my morning fitness routine.  It was a game changer.  Rock climbing is like a big physical puzzle.  Sometimes your body is a part of the puzzle piece.  This exercise will work your mind, spirit and body in new ways.  I highly recommend this one.

The best way to jump start your workout routine is to find something interesting and start small.  If money is a concern, focus on inexpensive or free activities.  Walking, hiking or running or good options.  Invite your family and friends to join you!

What are some different ways you could join thousands who are kick starting their physical exercise now?
