5 Reasons for Looking 10 Years Ahead

10 years ago today, I had my head between my knees and was running on about four hours of sleep per night.  I was terrified and did not know what to do at this point.  Our first daughter was born prematurely by my girlfriend at the time (now my wife).  Our relationship was hanging on by a thread.  We were broke, in debt, living an unhealthy lifestyle and making plans to move back home.

I was upset with myself and the world for allowing ourselves to be in this terrible position.  That day, I made a decision to fight for my daughter, my relationships, my health, and my financial situation.  I wrote down what I wanted my life to look like 10 years out and penciled in the solutions to get there.

Here are five problems I was experiencing at this time.

  1. My relationship with my girlfriend was going up and down.
  2. I was out of shape, not exercising, partying, not sleeping well and not eating healthy.
  3. My finances and debt were out of control.
  4. The out of wedlock pregnancy created some family tension on both sides.
  5. I had a victim mentality, a sense of entitlement, and blamed everyone for my problems.

Here are five ways I took action to address those problems.

  1. We hired a relationship counselor.  The benefits included these three points:  (1) The counselor deep dived into our past family relationships.  (2) We decided to split for a few years to get our lives together.  (3)  We reconnected in 2016 and have been happily married since 2018.
  2. I started working out in the mornings.  The benefits include these three points:  (1) This early morning schedule forced me to go to bed early.  (2)  Starting the day with sunrises, fresh air and exercise improves the rest of your day. (3) I still workout in the mornings and it has been a game changer.
  3. I turned to Dave Ramsey to provide guidance for consumer and student loan debt.  The benefits include these three points:  (1) Started living off a monthly budget and paying off debt.  (2)  I picked up two extra part time jobs and eventually higher paying employment.  (3) Today we are debt free expect for our mortgage.
  4. I started working on family relationships.  The benefits include these three points:  (1) Honored every commitment I made to my family.  (2)  Participated in family events, even when painful.  (3) Today, both sides of the families are very supportive and loving.
  5. It was time to stop blaming others and take responsibility for my situation.  The benefits include these three points:  (1) Started thinking with a growth mindset instead of a victim mindset.  (2) Instead of thinking the world owed me something, I was there to add value.   (3) Looking back over these past 10 years, my mindset change set me up for success.

The Point:  If you want to be in a better situation 10 years out, dream about your future life. Here are the five reasons and steps to look 10 years ahead for your goal accomplishments.

  1. Allow yourself to dream of a better life.
  2. Write down your goals.
  3. Identify the problems or roadblocks.
  4. Identify the potential solutions and put action to your plan.
  5. Enjoy the journey as the results and victories start to measure up to your dreams.

You can accomplish anything, especially if given 10 years to work towards your goals.

What are some big life goals you have ten years from now?

How do you plan to achieve those goals?

It would be honor to have your feedback!
